As online an integral part of all success businesses – so does the security of your business.
Your company probably started with email, and then a website. And they are low value, and low priority tasks. And even if there are risks – the value is low and protecting it was less priority.
When your company starts to transact over the internet, take orders, place orders, send money, do the payroll – all over the internet – it starts to become more important. And the dollar numbers start to become larger, and there is a further need to protect your business and its assets.
As your Cyber Security Officer I would be in charge of defending all of your IT and business assets from intrusion and loss. It’s a forward thinking and forward planning role, reporting with other senior management to the board or owner of the company.
At the onset of engagement a rapid assessment of your cyber security is conducted. This forms the basis for plans over the coming 12 months.
Only a quarterly basis there is reporting in terms actions and projects completed, any cyber intrusions, and progress on yearly goals. Goals and projects for the next quarter are set.
I will lead projects that help enhance the cyber security of the organisation. These include technology changes and upgrades, and also staff awareness training.
I am also on call if an intrusion occurs. I’ll liaise with 3rd parties during an event. I will report to management and owners during such an event.
Not all organisations can afford a full time Cyber Security Officer. The virtual role allows you to pay a partial salary, and have the benefits larger organisations can afford.
A Chief Information Officer is responsible for all IT systems and data management.
As an extension of this role it can also include how IT systems can be used to help manage workflow within an organisation. With out staff working together – there’s not much value in IT systems. The real value is how IT can leverage your other assets including employees and other capital assets.
IT systems need to be reliable and well maintained. They need to be able to be recovered in case of damage or loss.
At the onset of engagement a rapid assessment of your IT systems is conducted. This includes a review of how well those systems are maintained, ability to recover from damage, and how well they cover your existing workflows. This forms the basis for plans over the coming 12 months.
